Carus is one of the outstanding figures of the age of Goethe. A man of many talents, he was active as a physician, a natural scientist, a man of letters as well as being a painter of the first rank. He played a prominent role in the German Romantic movement both as an artist and as an author of important theoretical writings. His Briefe zur Landschaftsmalerei are regarded as of seminal importance in the understanding of early nineteenth-century thinking about art.[2] He settled permanently in Dresden in 1814.

The present oil painting showing the preserved west facade of Eldena, a former Cistercian abbey, as seen from the south-west was executed by Carus around 1819/20. It is the first of three versions of the subject.[3] It is based on a preparatory study drawn sur le motif on the evening of 13 August 1819 (fig. 1).[4] Carus's visit to Greifswald and the nearby ruins of Eldena Abbey marked the first stage of an eight-day journey to Rügen in the footsteps of Caspar David Friedrich. The beginning of Carus's close friendship with Friedrich dates from 1818.

Friedrich was born and grew up in Greifswald. The landscapes of the countryside near Greifswald and the ruins of Eldena Abbey occupied a central role in his work. They represented something of a leitmotif which he used to illustrate the transitory nature of existence. Thematic links to the work of Friedrich are frequent in Carus's paintings and drawings of the period 1819-20 as exemplified by the sepia drawing executed by Friedrich in 1814 which provided the inspiration for Carus's view of the motif (fig. 2).[5]

In the early 1820s, Carus's landscapes tend towards romantic exaggeration. In this he was clearly influenced by Friedrich. Carus's depiction of the tall, gaunt form of the ruined abbey silhouetted against the night sky is dramatized by his choice of a low viewpoint and his focus on a concentrated, narrow format. The murky half-light and steely gleam of the moonshine breaking through the clouds create a distorting, theatrical effect. The Gothic arch of the window is set against a cold light to contrast with the warm glow of candlelight emanating from the lonely half-timbered cottage. Unlike Friedrich, who composed his landscapes synthetically, basing them on a series of extremely precise nature studies, Carus's predominant interest is in the creation of a picturesque view based on the depiction of the topographical context of his chosen landscape motif.

Carus's masterly handling of moonlight and related phenomena reflects the intensity of his interest in the study of the night sky. To some extent this interest is indebted to Romanticism's (and especially Friedrich's) emotional enhancement of the role of the moon. However, Carus was to devote increasing attention to the study of the moon in the context of weather and light conditions. His interest in night views and the depiction of moonlight is documented by the large corpus of moonlight landscapes he produced in the course of his career.[6] He also devotes a whole chapter of his theoretical writings - Briefe über Landschaftsmalerei - to what he describes as 'moonlight pictures'.[7] In this chapter Carus, the trained natural scientist, is revealed as an 'intelligent landscapist'.[8] He seeks to combine the Romantic synthesis of 'sentiment' and 'nature' with a determination to objectify the representation of nature by means of a precise study of light conditions, interaction of colours and focus on the topographical context.

Carus's oeuvre is indebted to the enduring influence of Friedrich. However, even in the early days of their friendship, the natural scientist in Carus was to carefully monitor his perception of Friedrich's work. This was accompanied by an unfailing self-critical awareness. In 1819, in a letter to his friend Regis he describes Friedrich's Snow-covered Graveyard[9]: [...] The cadavers of the oaks are entirely realistic but the whole thing looks somewhat baroque and architectonic. And it seems as if they all have a tendency towards the architectural, limiting the freedom of the natural landscape [...].[10]

It is precisely this new, scientific perception of nature with its striving for objectivity against a background of romantic emotion that defines the uniqueness of Carus's artistic and art-theoretical oeuvre.

 



[1] A contemporary critic writing in Schorns Kunstblatt 1, 1820, p.380 describes the painting as: No. 162, Window of a ruined abbey through which one spies a moonlit sky. This depiction has a place in the realm of mysticism, however I wish to reserve more extended discussion for Friedrich. In painterly effect, nothing is to be compared to the Gothic window and the sky [...]. So it is, although less worthy, with Carus's Gothic window, it does not create the desired effect because the artist's aim is too manifest. While both artists allow taste to rein in their imagination, their extraordinary poetic sensibilities nevertheless grant us pleasures that in centuries to come will delight our grandchildren.
